ANDAZ 5TH AVENUE "BOOKENDS"
1DROP WALLS — CASE STUDY
Andaz 5th Avenue · "Bookends" by Sean Maze
Andaz 5th Avenue
An original mural for a hotel that sits steps from the New York Public Library — a literary work rooted in its own address.
PROJECT DETAILS
Client: Andaz 5th Avenue (Hyatt)
Location: Midtown Manhattan, NYC
Year: 2023
Artist: Sean Maze
Scope: Hotel mural commission
THE BRIEF
Andaz 5th Avenue sits on one of Midtown's most literary blocks — steps from the New York Public Library, a neighbor and partner to the hotel. The commission called for permanent art that spoke to that specific address: not generic lobby decoration, but a piece that could only belong here. The work had to feel native to its corner of the city.
THE ARTIST
We matched the brief to Sean Maze, a muralist working in street art and pop art whose signature is abstract, dreamlike landscapes in dialogue with the built environment. His vocabulary — vivid color, layered urban reference — fit a hotel that wanted energy and craft in the same frame. Andaz approved his body of work before a single line was drawn.
THE CONCEPT — "BOOKENDS"
Maze created Bookends, an original piece drawing directly on the hotel's literary surroundings. The work threads the printed word and echoes of the library next door through Maze's signature dreamscape — a nod to the neighborhood that reads as poetry rather than theme. Real and fictional New York moments surface across the composition. The result is bound to its location; it couldn't hang anywhere else.
THE OUTCOME
Installed at Andaz 5th Avenue in 2023, Bookends became part of the hotel's ongoing commitment to New York City artists and its 5th Avenue gallery program — a piece guests notice, photograph, and remember. For 1DROP Walls, it's the model working exactly as intended: the right artist, matched to the right space, managed end-to-end from brief to finished wall.
“Art that could only belong to this address.”
